FALL ONLINE CLASS

Understanding ADHD/ADD and Executive Functioning in Children and Adolescents
Smith College School for Social Work Office of Continuing Education

4 hours, 4 CEUs, $80

Smith College School for Social Work Office of Continuing Education
Many clinicians today possess limited information and training in working with children and adolescents who have been diagnosed with ADHD/ADD. They often do not understand the complexity of biology, behaviors and family environments which exacerbate the symptoms and complicate treatment. Clinicians seem to struggle to create effective interventions to help these young people and their families manage life with ADHD/ADD. This course will provide participants with the tools to work with these clients more successfully. It will review the literature about ADHD/ADD and provide a historical context in which to consider this disorder. It will delineate the neurological factors that characterize ADHD/ADD, discuss the types of medication and the political and biological issues involved in using them as well as introduce and clarify the executive functions of the brain and how they are affected by this disorder. In addition, treatment implications and modalities for working with this population will be evaluated and taught. Participants will also learn about how to address the common comorbid conditions of anxiety, depression and learning disorders which further complicate treatment. Methods of teaching include didactic seminar, case examples and small and large group discussions.

A one-day class professional education seminar for CEU’s on June 24, 2016 at Smith College School for Social work in Northampton, MA .

This course will examine the biology of the adolescent brain as it relates to teen behavior, emotion and socialization. There has been a recent explosion in neurological research about the changing teenage brain that directly affects clinical work with adolescents and their families. Starting with an examination of this information, we will then look at how biology interfaces with developmental psychology and social and emotional intelligence. We will then review the growth of executive functioning skills and look at how these skills can be taught to teens within the context of psychotherapy. We will examine how to work with individual adolescents more effectively in clinics, private practice or school settings using these findings. We will also review significant, relevant treatment modalities based on this information as well as how to apply these ideas to direct clinical work within a family context. In addition, we will explore how to assist parents of varying socioeconomic backgrounds to understand and guide their children with less stress and more success. Methods of teaching include didactic seminar, case examples and small and large group discussions. Participants are strongly encouraged to come to the seminar with a clinical dilemma related to their work.

The course meets from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break to be scheduled.

FALL 2016 ADHD Consultation Group for Clinicians: A four-part training series
Dr. Sharon Saline’s Office | 43 Center Street, Suite 303, Northampton, MA 01060

I am pleased to announce that I will once again provide a year-long monthly training group this year for clinicians who work with children, teens and young adults with ADHD. This group will provide education about ADHD (and co-occurring diagnoses) as well as consultation about specific clinical issues and case discussion. Relevant readings will be available to enhance our dialogue. This group is geared to clinicians of all levels of experience who want to learn more about how to work effectively with youngsters (and their families) who are struggling with the daily challenges of living with ADHD. This population presents very complicated issues that benefit from thoughtful examination and exploration.

For almost 25 years, I have used a positive psychology approach that is grounded in neurological research, family systems theory, developmental psychology and issues of race and class. It is based on empathy (meeting kids where they are), self-regulation (everyone learning to manage themselves so they can act more effectively) and collaboration (parents and their children working together to find solutions to daily problems). This practice relies on strength-based thinking, focusing on what an ADHD child or teen is already doing well (enough) and what interests them, using that as a starting point for any desired changes and interventions. Strength-based thinking increases self-confidence, resilience and motivation because people are working from a place of competency instead of failure. My work also incorporates mindfulness and body awareness as a means to build self-understanding and compassion. Additionally, I also focus on teaching communication skills and improving executive functioning deficits as part of the therapy. This multi-faceted approach helps everyone in the family feel calmer and more hopeful. I have seen excellent results in many ADHD clients over the years working from this perspective.

I hope that you will consider joining me for this exciting training which will meet monthly from September 2016 through June 2017 at my office in Northampton from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The group will be limited to 5 people and the weekly fee will be $45 per person.

Please contact me via email or phone if you are interested.

FALL 2015 ADHD Consultation Group for Clinicians: A four-part training series starting this fall!

It may be possible to continue into the spring if there is sufficient interest.
