Counseling For Young Adults

Becoming an adult is one of the hardest transitions you and your teen will go through. Adulting has many challenges, especially for those with ADHD and neurodivergent brains. To help, I work with teens, young adults and their families on building self-reliance while maintaining positive connections. We focus on improving executive functioning skills, productivity and social interactions among many other issues such as finances, health care and independent living.

I offer a strength-based, compassionate and practical approach so you see how capable you are and share your gifts with others.

Young adults experience a wide range of challenges as they are working their way from being adolescents to self-sufficient adults. The psychotherapy community calls this cohort “emerging adults” and it’s fitting, as so many young adults are like butterflies emerging from the cocoon of family life. Becoming an adult is messy, exhilarating, confusing, scary and so much more.

When young adults need counseling, there can be many reasons why they want to take the plunge. These range from genuine mental health challenges like depression and anxiety to learning to understand their unique brains and how to maximize their strengths as an adult.

The ADHD brain continues changing as people get older and this neuroplasticity contributes to more independence and less reliance on parental advice. Navigating common ADHD issues like impulsivity, inattention and overwhelm often complicates the process of adulting. You can learn how to make this process smoother and easier.

To help, I offer two different counseling services for young adults.

Psychotherapy for Emerging Adults

ADHD rarely travels alone, and it is often accompanied by anxiety, depression, or learning disabilities, psychotherapy can help. I maintain a private practice in Northampton, Massachusetts where I work with neurodivergent young adults who are dealing with issues related to ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities, stress, depression, gender and more.

Counseling for young adults is different from family counseling because the family is often less involved at this stage of life. That said, in many instances, counseling can help people who are struggling to live independently and make healthy choices based on greater personal understanding and thoughtful choices.

It’s my hope that the counseling I offer will help my clients discover and develop their strengths, reduce daily challenges, lower stress and find ways to use their unique brains to create rewarding adult lives with confidence and positive self-esteem.

ADHD Consulting for Young Adults and Their Families

I also offer online consulting for emerging adults. These sessions can support you in assessing your situation, exploring new strategies to manage your issues and create solutions for your best next steps. Consulting is more psychoeducational in nature and is meant to inform and educate so you’re more empowered to make healthy decisions in your adult future.

The family passage into adulthood can be both exciting and bittersweet. I’m here to help you navigate this journey.
